Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara officially took over the reins of the Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday, succeeding Vice President Sara Duterte, who resigned from the agency last month.
In a symbolic gesture during the simple turnover ceremony held at the DepEd Complex in Pasig City, the Vice President handed over the DepEd Seal and Flag to Angara, marking the transition of leadership at the department.

Senator Sonny Angara has filed a bill seeking to grant Philippine citizenship to University of the Philippines women’s basketball team center Favour Ogechukwu Onoh.
In filing Senate Bill No. 2670, Angara, who is chairman of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, said the Nigeria-born Onoh would be a valuable addition to the Gilas Pilipinas with her youth, tenacity and potential for further growth and development as a player.

The New Government Procurement Act (NGPA), a measure seen to address inefficiencies and wastage in public transactions by plugging loopholes in the existing law, is now up for review and signing by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Senator Sonny Angara, the principal author and sponsor of Senate Bill No. 2593 or the NGPA, said the new procurement law promotes greater transparency, competitiveness, efficiency, professionalism accountability, and sustainability in the government procurement process.

Baguio City is the first leg of the regional consultations the Senate subcommittee on constitutional amendments and revision of codes is holding for the proposed amendments to the economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution.
A total of five public hearings have been held by the subcommittee on the Resolution of Both Houses No. 6 (RBH No. 6) that seeks to relax the foreign equity restrictions on public utilities, higher education and the advertising sector.

The Senate is set to resume on Thursday, May 9, 2024, its hearings on the proposed amendments to the economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution.
It will be the fifth hearing of the Senate subcommittee on constitutional amendments and revision of codes chaired by Senator Sonny Angara on the Resolution of Both Houses No. 6 that proposes to amend three provisions of the Constitution that deal with opening up public utilities, education and advertising to foreign ownership.

Senator Sonny Angara has initiated the process for the citizenship bid of Bennie Boatwright III, who is being eyed as another key addition to the Gilas Pilipinas national men’s basketball team.
Angara, who serves as chairman of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, on Monday filed Senate Bill No. 2646, which seeks to grant citizenship to the 27-year-old Boatwright.
This comes after preliminary meetings between Boatwright and SBP officials, including its President Al Panlilio, who has stated that the team has found “the right guy.”

Senator Sonny Angara called on the private sector to take part in the work of crafting the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of Republic Act 11981 or the Tatak Pinoy (Proudly Filipino) Act.
As the principal stakeholders of the Tatak Pinoy Act, Angara said the private sector, particularly the domestic enterprises should play an active role in ensuring that the landmark law will be properly implemented and will obtain its goal of improving the competitiveness of Philippine industries.
